Dr Val Chen is an experienced teacher and researcher. Before pursuing his PhD at the City University of Hong Kong, he worked at Northwestern Polytechnic University and Jinan University. During his 20 odd years teaching career, he has taught courses in Contrastive Linguistics, Cognition and Culture, Sociolinguistics, Discourse Analysis, Multicultural Communication, Introductory Putonghua, Effective Communication, English for Special Purposes, English for Academic Purpose, English Enhancement, Translation, and Preparatory Programme for National Accreditation Examinations for Translators and Interpreters (NAETI) etc., to undergraduates, postgraduates, and adult learners including corporate managers and Hong Kong school teachers. He also delivered corporate training at companies such as Perlos, Emerson, AIA, and Flextronix. He received the CPCE Outstanding Teaching Performance/Achievement Award in 2016/17.

Prior to joining this institution, Dr Chen was working as a Research Fellow at The Halliday Centre for Intelligent Applications of Language Studies at CityU. His research work extends widely, ranging Cognition / Neurocognition, Pragmatics, Systematic Functional Linguistics, Ontology, Knowledge Engineering, and Translation. His publications include internationally peer-refereed journals, conference proceedings and book chapters. He was awarded the “Outstanding Academic Performance Award” and two “Departmental Publication Awards” at CityU.

Dr Chen’s aspiration for enriching life with new experiences found its expression in his deeds, such as when he acted as the Vice President of his co-founded company “Biaoqi Electronics” in Guangzhou, and when he served as team leader of the International Antarctica Expedition’s (IAE-5) Hong Kong Representative Team.
