Dr Jason Chan, MH, JP Discusses “Fake Recommendations” on “A Closer Look”

Applying for master’s or doctoral programmes typically requires the submission of recommendation letters. Recently, however, some online intermediaries have claimed they can sell recommendation letters from renowned professors at top overseas universities for several thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. They even assert that such letters can be sent using the institutions’ exclusive “.edu” email domains, which has raised public concern.

The TVB programme “A Closer Look” recently featured an interview with Dr Jason Chan, MH, JP, Director of PolyU SPEED, on the topic of “fake recommendation letters”. In the programme, Dr Chan explained the importance of recommendation letters in the admissions process.

Addressing the growing problem of falsification, Dr Chan stressed that the School exercises strict scrutiny during admissions. He also shared the mechanisms and procedures used to carefully verify the authenticity of recommendation letters, thereby ensuring academic integrity and fairness in student admissions.
