Promoting all-round development and cultivating students’ diverse talents
Dr Jack Lo, Director of PolyU SPEED, said that he took great pride in having 178 students receiving the scholarships or awards in recognition of their outstanding achievements in both academic studies and co-curricular activities in the 2016/17 academic year. The amount of scholarships is over HK$1.8 million. With a strong emphasis on students’ all-round development, the School also provided more than 510 quotas of scholarships and student support funds of a total of over HK$4.5 million in 2016/17. Through joining the “PolyU-SPEED International Summer School Programmes”, “PolyU-SPEED China Internship Programmes” or “Summer Experiential Tours”, students visited USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Portugal, Dubai, Korea, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Beijing, etc., for internship and cultural exchange. These programmes aim at widening students’ horizons and enabling them to experience different cultures.
Moreover, the School has put in much effort to enhance students’ competitiveness in the job market. Since 2015, the School has organised “Career Fair” and invited over 100 corporations or organisations to join the fair each year, which help final-year students in job search. In order to enrich students’ work experience, the School also co-operates with different corporations and organisations to offer the Work-Integrated Education & Summer Placement Programmes.
“Failure Teaches Success” – Working hard to reach the dream
At the end of the ceremony, Dr Lo encouraged students by sharing a quote from Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the former President of South Africa, “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again”. He remarked that “failure teaches success”. The road to success is always full of difficulties. Student should be determined, keep working hard and reach their dream eventually.
