Promoting all-round development and cultivating students’ diverse talents
Dr Jack Lo, Director of PolyU SPEED, said that he took great pride to have over 300 students receiving the scholarships or awards in recognition of their outstanding achievements in both academic studies and co-curricular activities in the 2015/16 academic year. With a strong emphasis on students’ all-round development, the School provided more than 500 quotas of scholarships and student support funds in a total amount of over HK$3.5 million in 2015/16. Through joining the “PolyU-SPEED International Summer School Programmes”, “PolyU-SPEED China Internship Programmes” or “Summer Experiential Tour”, students visited USA, UK, Dubai, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Beijing, etc., for internship and cultural exchange. These programmes aim at widening students’ horizons and enable them to experience different cultures.
Moreover, the School has put in much effort to enhance students’ competitiveness in the job market. Since 2015, the School has organised “Career Fair” and invited nearly 100 corporations or organisations each year, providing over 500 job vacancies to help final year students in their job search. In order to enrich students’ work experience, the School also co-operates with different corporations and organisations to offer the Work-Integrated Education & Summer Placement Programmes. Over 100 students were provided with internship opportunities and scholarships in a total amount of over HK$1.9 million.
Working hard to reach for dreams in a marathon-like life
In the Ceremony, Dr Lo also recalled his experience in applying for scholarships during his university days. With his story, Dr Lo hoped to remind the awardees the importance of extra-curricular activities while they are working hard academically. Dr Lo concluded his speech with a Western proverb, “Life is not a sprint; it’s a marathon”. He remarked that receiving scholarship was just one of the milestones on the road to success; students should keep working hard to finish the life marathon and reaching for their dreams.
